This project is a collaboration with Dr. Seth Donahue at Colorado State University.

CT-Scan images of a bighorn sheep’s horns and skull are being segmented into bone and horn material to generate a complex 3D geometry. The geometry will next be discretized into thousands of elements in a mesh which will then be analyzed under static and dynamic loading. The model will help to determine the role of the horn (keratin), the horn core (bone) and frontal skull in elastic energy absorption and stress distribution. The results of this study will provide insight for multiple impact materials and structures such as football helmets.
