The Department of Architecture at UMass Amherst provides an accessible, intellectually rigorous design education that firmly grounds students in the art and science of the built environment. The interdisciplinary, collaborative program embraces spirited, socially progressive, and environmentally responsive design. As New England’s first public architecture program, the faculty and students engage the region in integrated and interdisciplinary teaching, research, and outreach. As such, the department has extensive and varied research activities.

Goals of Department of Architecture research include:

  • Developing new knowledge, tools, processes, to spur innovation in architecture
  • Engaging in cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research that addresses current challenges in architectural design
  • Engaging with the architectural profession to bridge the gap between the profession and the academy
  • Extending design excellence into communities to create high-performance, resilient buildings that support just and sustainable communities.
