2014 Conference Presentations

Noyce S2TLC Participants have had several proposals accepted and plan to present at national conferences:

At the National Science Teacher’s Association national conference,
April 3-6, 2014 in Boston, MA:

Kathleen Davis, Associate Professor, College of Education, University of Massachusetts Amherst and Principal Investigator of S2TLC, will be presenting with  Angie Ruggeri of Greenfield 8th Grade Academy, Yvonne Hilyard of Holyoke’s Morgan Elementary School, Keith Wright of Springfield’s Renaissance School, and Uma Palreddy of Springfield’s Chestnut Accelerated Middle School: Coming to See What’s Possible: Linking STEM Curricula to the Cultural Communities of Schools .

Cathy Wilkins, science teacher at Greenfield High School, together with Thomas Owen, doctoral student at the UMass College of Education, and Kathleen Davis, will present, Uncovering Evolution: An Inquiry-Oriented Activity for Introducing Evolution by way of Modeling an Archeological Excavation.

Keith Wright, high school chemistry teacher at The Renaissance School in Springfield, MA, together with Monica Au-Yeung, teacher at The Charter High School for Arts, Performing and Multimedia (CHAMPS) in Van Nuys, CA together with Kathleen Davis, will present, Designing the Strongest Voltaic Cell in a High School Classroom.

Christine Perham, biology teacher at Mahar Regional High School in Orange, MA, together with Tom Owen will present, Exploring Appendicular Anatomy Through and Inquiry-oriented Activity.

Barbara Schulze, chemistry teacher at Mahar Regional High School, together with Jesse Trzpit, chemistry teacher at Hopewell High School in Huntsville, NC, will present, From Lemons to Activity Series.

Andy Bowersox, chemistry teacher at Greenfield High School, will present, Teaching Content Standards: A Thematic Approach.

At the National Council of Teaching of Mathematics annual meeting and exposition, April 9-12, 2014 in New Orleans, LA:

Sandra Madden, Assistant Professor, College of Education, University of Massachusetts Amherst and S2TLC Co-Principal Investigator, will present Supporting STEM Teaching and Learning through Communities.

Lorie Banks, 7th grade mathematics teacher at Morgan Elementary School in Holyoke, MA will present, The 3 R’s: Reading, Writing and ‘Rithmatic Language and Math.

Jeremiah Barrett, 7th grade mathematics teacher at Peck Full Service Community School in Holyoke, MA, will present, Teaching Reading Comprehension in Math using Read Aloud -Think Aloud.

Linda Singer, 6th grade mathematics teacher and administrator at the Springfield Public Day Middle School together with Annie Parker, a mathematics teacher at the same school, will present, Patterns and Operations: Teaching Algebra to Special Populations.
