Salamanders are vertebrates that have evolved over the last 150-200 million years to be very ecologically diverse (Davic & Welsh, 2004, p. 405). There are over 400 species in 59 genera and 10 families spread around the world, 234 of these are found in North America (p. 405). Of the 234 species of salamander found in North America, 67 (29%) are listed as imperiled or critically imperiled (p. 405).
