On musical reinterpretation

One of the things that calls my attention is the way in which songs are taken on by different cultures and traditions. Here are some of my favorite examples.

The Peruvian waltz, “Que nadie sepa mi sufrir” by Argentineans Angel Cabral and Enrique Dizeo, here interpreted by Agustín Irusta:

But made internationally famous as “La foule” by Edith Piaf:

A song with different Spanish and English interpretations is “¿Quién será?” by Mexican composer Pablo Beltrán Ruiz, here interpreted by his orchestra:

Here it is as “Sway”, as it became known in the US, sang by Rosemary Clooney with Dámaso Pérez Prado’s orchestra:

Finally, to look at movements from French into English, here is “La Mer” sang by its composer Charles Trénet:

And made famous in the US by Bobby Darin as “Beyond the Sea”:
