The blog is about phonetics, phonology, linguistics, and anything that I can, even at a stretch, relate to these topics.

I am a phonetician, with a special interest in how speech sounds are perceived. My research investigates how general properties of the auditory system influence the perception of speech sounds, and how the listener’s linguistic knowledge does so. I have also begun to do fieldwork on Otomanguean languages, with a particular focus on Chinantecan languages.

I received a PhD in linguistics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1985. I taught in the Linguistics Department at the University of Texas at Austin 1984-1986, and in the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics at Cornell University 1986-1990, before joining the Department of Linguistics at the University of Massachuetts, Amherst in 1990. Together with Mary Beckman of the Ohio State University, I founded the series of Laboratory Phonology Conferences in 1987,
