Pilobolus

This collaborative dance company is acclaimed for its mix of humor, invention, and drama. Drawing inspiration from biology, Pilobolus has created a dance vocabulary all its own. Their smooth, organic choreography often blurs the lines between individual performers, creating a sense of dance-troupe-as-organism.

About Pilobolus, The New York Times writes, “the continuity of changing imagery, the easy sensuousness and the wonderful push-me-pull-you surprises of the physicality: These still seem to come right out of their makers” dreams and into ours.” More Information

  2. I’ve been waiting many years to see Pilobolus and was thrilled to finally get the chance. The performance was incredible and inspiring. I have no idea how they do what they do. They make the impossible seem effortless.

  3. This was my 4th time seeing this amazing dance ensemble (1st time @ FAC). I am still feeling in awe & inspired by such an fascinating performance! I look froward to their next show.

  4. I am not a modern dance afficionado, but have wanted to see them for years. This performance was amazing. I was expecting acrobatic talent, but their enduring physical strength seemed superhuman. I was exhausted from watching! (I guess I need to keep up with my yoga!)

  5. It was the first time I saw dancers floating and levitating on stage! I loved it!

  6. This performance was stunning and mesmerizing! It was not just dance and stellar performance but showed us total body control along with beauty, fluidity and humor. I think the entire audience was breathless—I know I was. Thank you, FAC, for bringing us such an experience!

  7. This is the 3rd time we’ve seen Pilobus at FAC and they never fail to amaze me.
Thanks to FAC for bringing this fantastic company to the valley.

  8. What a wonderful performance. I’ve have always wanted to see them perform and I am thrilled with what I saw last night. Worth the wait from February!!

  9. Pilobus is my favorite dance company. They combine beautiful choreography and amazingly athletic and inventive dance moves and positions. They are so much fun and it was great to hear the kids laughter during the Lyndonwalk dance. Thanks, FAC!

  10. Astounding! The dancers move as one organic being making it difficult to tell where individual bodies begin and end. They defy gravity in leaps and bounds. Pilobulus is creativity to the max. The performance combined solemnity, humor, and just plain fun. Day 2 was extraordinary. I can’t wait for them to return. Georgie

  11. Magical… powerful fluidity….graceful strength….jaw-dropping awesome beauty…. even fabulous humor. Pilobolus bursts out of mere language. We waited a long time since that snowy night in February; worth the wait! Thanks to the FAC for bringing us this performance.

  12. What a dynamite evening of performance from Pilobolus! The opening dance piece was the best thing I’ve seen all year at the FAC. Thank you for another great season, and in particular for rescheduling Pilobolus.

  13. reminds me how amazing and beautiful the human body is! So much strength and imagination and fun!

  14. The Pilobolus dancers never cease to amaze. It was a marvelous way to end the Fine Arts season (thanks to a snow storm!)

  15. My wife likes Pilobolus and I don’t care that much but I like her a lot. I want to comment on the way the FAC is operated. I do not understand why you do not start on time or why the intermission was so extremely long. You tolerate behavior that is inappropriate and therefore encourage it. I’m not even talking about the woman who sat next to me and nursed her 4 to 5 year old son. That’s right, 4 or 5 years old. But we have some “unusual” people in Amherst. I also don’t know why you have only 2 ticket takers on each side so that the audience has to get all jammed up in the lobby. The experience would be better if you operated better.

  16. Pilobolus was amazing! I had a great time– and seriously, 4-5 years old? That’s weird…

  17. Absolutely fantastic!!!! I could have watched for another hour! The finale was great fun!

  18. I hope they come back next year. It was the BEST performance of the year!

  19. I love Pilobolus! So inspiring to see men and women dance with such grace, strength and imagination. Made me want to try out some of the moves. The “crabwalk”…one hand and foot on the ground with the other hand holding the other foot??? OMG! Something to aspire to…if I was 20 years younger.

Thank you FAC for bringing Pilobolus back

  20. Thank you for bringing not only an awe filled evening with unparalled imagination creativity, wit, and proof of human endurance, but dreams come to life onstage! Every piece brought out new emotions within each of us in the audience. They are masters of dance and storytelling, keeping all of us at the edges of our seats as we observed each new dance unfold. The dancers seemed to morph from human to otherworldly and back while stretching to the very limits of human abilities, holding our collective breath as they completely captivated us all. An incredibly beautiful experience. I certainly hope they return again to mesmerize us !

  21. Pilobolus was just spectacular. The flexibility and acrobatic skills of the dance are remakable.

  22. Once again, with a small troupe of dedicated dancers, Pilobolus put on an outstanding show. The bodies seemed to almost levitate at times. “Walklyndon” was laugh-out-loud fun, and “Duet” was an unusual pas-de-deux. Thank you for re-scheduling them.

  23. omg omg OMG…………What everybody said and MORE>
how can you put into words…… thank you all for doing just that
    EVERYTHING was my favorite part.
But to be remembered is the chuckle of the childs laughter during the walking part
How spectacular an evening, definitely a night to remember

  24. Fabulous! I’ve heard so much about Pilobolus, and have always wanted to see them Finally, but they were SO much more than I had expected. As one of my friends commented, at intermission, it’s like sculpture in motion. The performers were SO physically fit and beyond that, so much in control of their bodies that they made us forget they were human bodies, but rather that they were continually fluid art! Thanks so much FAC for getting them here – at last.

  25. Pilobilous was/are utterly fantastic! Their strength, agility, energy and creativity are so much fun to watch.

  26. I loved to see how they inspired such excitement and appreciation. The last piece with sliding in the liquid was especially fun and completely energized the audience. We danced out of the Fine Arts Center ourselves!
