Welcome to the Digital Fabrication Lab at UMass Amherst in the John W Olver Design Building. More commonly we call this space the Fab Lab

This space contains:

(2) Lasercutters
(1) Vacuum-Former
(3) 3D Printers
(1) CNC Router

Students and faculty in the Design Building use this space to try out
design ideas spatially, using machine labor to create small models, rather than cutting these models by hand.

The most successful work in the lab uses a variety of techniques to create visually compelling, 3D models which illustrate buildings in a way that drawings can’t. Careful planning, foresight, and patience will produce better results.

Monitor Training

By becoming a monitor you will have card access to the fablab and can schedule your own work sessions at times that work best for you. You will also gain skills and knowledge that will be beneficial both in school and in professional settings. To gain monitor status you will need to engage in an additional hour training session and will need to offer a 3 hour (consecutive) weekly time slot in the lab for open lab status for students can come in and work. Contact the shop manager or Lab TA about becoming a monitor.

Safety

As in any lab or shop space, safety is the first priority in the Digital
Fabrication Lab. Safety glasses must be worn by everyone in the
room while the laser is working. Know the location of the following
pieces of equipment:

-Safety Glasses
-First aid Kit
-Fire extinguishers
-Equipment E-stops

If you feel unsure or uneasy, stop your cut and ask questions. If your
cut begins to smoke, or smoke builds up inside the machine, use
the emergency stop to stop your cut.

If your cut is on fire, stop the cut with an emergency stop button.
Leave the lid of the machine closed.
