The Commonwealth Community Services (CCS) clinical services team work with adults with complex communication needs and intellectual disabilities to support their communication, accessing their environment, and helping them be as independent as possible within their everyday environment. This internship site has a focus of speech and language services with the possibility of collaborating with an occupational therapist and other professionals.

Individual homes, group homes, day programs, and agencies within Western Massachusetts                                                                                           

Accessible by Public Transportation?

 Location sites vary – intern should have their own transportation

General job description of what an intern might do:

The focus of this internship is to expose interns to the field of speech pathology with an emphasis on functional communication consultation services for adults. Interns will work with a diverse group of individuals and professionals in various environments. Possible job responsibilities may include:

  •     Assist in the direct services and consultation services.
  •     Assist in the development of communication supports and materials.
  •     Learn about software as well as high-tech and low-tech communication supports.
  •     Shadow and/or assist a speech pathologist to develop an understanding of the role of a speech language pathologist.
  •     Observe professionals as they perform their jobs and collaborate with one another.
  •     Participate in trainings.
  •     Review charts and other material relevant to case management.
