Description:

AbilityPLUS Adaptive Sports is a 501C(3) not-for-profit organization with the following mission:

To offer increased access to athletic and recreational opportunities for persons with physical and cognitive disabilities that will create freedom, promote independence, support inclusion and help those individuals and their families discover their full social, mental and athletic potential.

The AbilityPLUS Internship Program is available to undergraduate and post-graduate students in various disciplines wishing to gain experience working with people with disabilities in a sports/athletic/recreational environment. AbilityPLUS students have disabilities that range widely, from mental, intellectual and cognitive conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injury, to visual impairment, hearing impairment, and physical disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida, Multiple Sclerosis, amputations, and spinal cord injuries. Many of these conditions are co-morbid.

An individual seeking an internship with AbilityPLUS must possess compassion, patience, intuition, a strong work ethic, and be committed to meet the changing needs of our students. Flexibility in schedule and expectations are required of an AbilityPLUS intern.

AbilityPLUS Interns work with students with a wide variety of disabilities, and may also work with various aspects of operating a nonprofit organization, including: student/guest contact and reservations; volunteer qualifications and scheduling; fundraising events; clerical needs; marketing; and all other projects as typically arise within a small not-for-profit organization.

The AbilityPLUS Intern must understand and be able to convey the tremendous impact adaptive sports programs have on the lives of people with disabilities and their families/caregivers, as well as the impact these programs have in changing not only perceptions about people with disabilities and their place in society, but also in moving policy here in the US and worldwide.

The successful Intern will use their experience with AbilityPLUS Adaptive Sports to positively impact:

  • The lives of people with disabilities and their families/caregivers
  • Perceptions about people with disabilities and their contributions to society
  • Public policy and its role in the lives of people with disabilities and their families/caregivers
