Adapted Horseback Riding

The Developmental Disabilities and Human Services (DDHS) specialization program partners with the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences and The Achieve Collective, Inc. to offer Equine Assisted Services for People with Disabilities (ANIMLSCI 397G). In this course, students will learn about equine-assisted services for people with disabilities, such as adapted horseback riding, equine assisted therapies (PT/OT/SLP), equine facilitated psychotherapy and more. Students will have hands-on experience each week assisting with adapted riding lessons with community members.

Credits. The course is 3 credits. Two credits are given for participation in the weekly course and completion of assignments. One credit is given for 3 hours of field experience, in line with guidelines for internship credit hours.

Eligibility. Students across all majors and years are welcome to apply to enroll. Students will a background working with horses and/or people with disabilities will receive priority enrollment, however students with no prior experience are welcome to apply.

Training. Students will participate in hands-on practice of horse-related skills prior to supporting riders with disabilities in the adapted riding lessons.

Labs. Labs take place at the UMass Hadley Farm (111 N. Maple Street, Hadley, MA 01035) and Chestnut Woods farm (3 Barton Street, Granby, MA 01033).

Lab assignment. Lab assignments are based on students’ profiles (e.g., horse experience, experience working with people with disabilities) as well as schedules of availability.

Transportation. Shuttle transportation to the farms is provided for most, but not all, labs. Students without access to transportation will be assigned to labs with shuttle access or carpool access.

Class time: Wednesday, 12:20-2:00
*Shuttle leaves Paige Hall on the main campus at 12:20. Class starts at 12:30.
