How do I watch talks?

When you log into the CUNY live talks on Zoom, you’ll see a display that looks something a little like this:

This screen has the presenter’s slides, a video inset of the presenter and panelists, and a task bar at the bottom. The video inset will show you the presenter who is speaking:

You can move this around on your screen, make it larger, smaller, and focus it on the one person talking right now.

During the talk, you will not be able to interact directly with other attendees over Zoom; if you’d like to chat with other folks watching, you’ll need to connect some other way!

How do I submit a question?

You will be able to ask questions during the talks. To submit a question, click on the Q&A button at the bottom of the Zoom panel on your screen:

Doing this will open a window, which you can type your question into:

Type in your question …

And then hit ‘send.’ Your question will be sent to the host, the session chair, and the panelists. The session chair is in charge of selecting questions that they will pass onto the speaker. Please note:

  • Questions are subject to the CUNY code of conduct. We will dismiss questions that are in violation of this code.
  • We will prioritize questions from pre-tenure and student attendees. So if you are pre-tenure or a student, please note this when you submit your question.
  • Please only submit one question per attendee, per talk.

What happens if my question is selected?

During the live question period, the session chair will select questions to pass onto the presenter. If your question is selected, the session chair will call your name, turn on your audio, and invite you to talk. Then you will be able to put your question to the presenter directly, and discuss directly with the presenter. Please note:

  • Make sure you have a working microphone if you submit a question, so that you will be able to give your question if selected.
  • We may not be able to get to everyone’s questions in the space of a question period.
