class 25  racism at UMass?

With the Cape Cod Lounge at the University of Massachusetts Student Union filled to capacity, students listen from a hallway during a panel discussion on racism and racial profiling, Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2018.

Write responses to the following questions based on your own experiences.  One to two pages.

  1. What is your experience of racism at UMass?  What is your sense of how it operates on individual and institutional levels?  On an educational level, what has informed your understanding of how racism works, e.g. classroom curriculum, workshops, media, social relationships.  In relation to racism, have you ever been a witness? What is the challenge of being a bystander?
  2. In response to concerns we discussed in class 23 about the reproduction of racist and misogynist narratives in rap music, are you aware of EI products — songs, stories, dramas, movies, TV, events, etc. — that project alternatives to racism and misogyny?   If there’s a particular song or other social media product/platform, include an IRL that could be posted to the class FB group.

Written assignments are single-spaced & typed in Times New Roman or Arial (size 12 font), 1-inch margins all around. Remember to proofread. Include a heading (single-spaced) that includes name, date, assignment title.  Turn in as a paper document.
