Framing Layout Project

The Framing Layout Project – value is 15% of total course grade.

You may do this Term Project in teams of 2 people maximum. If you choose to do this, you must submit one report with both names and each member submit a peer evaluation form.

Your task is to use WoodWorks® Sizer to design the first and second floor joists and beams, roof rafters and wall studs of a standard colonial home.

Your Framing Layout Report is DUE November 28  December 5 (extended)

Instructions

Document this project as though you would be handing it over to your employer or client. Your calculations and assumptions should be clearly shown.

  • Show your working/calculations CLEARLY on pages separate from this document. Itemize material weights to calculate dead loads and explain how line loads are calculated. If you make judgments and assumptions, explain them clearly.
  • Assume all floor and ceiling joists, roof rafters and wall studs at 24 inches on-center.
  • Use the products partially specified in the attached summary sheets.
  • PROVIDE THE “DESIGN CHECK CALCULATION SHEET” FOR EACH MEMBER YOU DESIGN.
    • LABEL SHEETS CLEARLY to correspond to members on the plan by saving them with logical names. For example, save the file for ceiling joist J1.3 as ceiling_J1_3.wwb. The project name will be shown in the right hand corner of the sheet.
    • LABEL loads on sheets to clearly show from where they came. For example, separate and label roof DL and wall DL on wall.2.
  • Complete the Summary Sheets and hand them in with your project.

Load Conditions

  • Use the materials as shown on the drawings and Table B in your text (Breyer et. al. – Design of Wood Structures) to estimate floor, roof and wall dead loads. Round the dead load to the nearest multiple of 5psf.
  • Determine appropriate floor and attic live loads in chapter 4 of SEI/ASCE 7 “Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures”.
  • The design snow load for the region where the house will be built is 35psf, projected.
  • Wind and seismic loads can be ignored.

Grading

Your mark will be based on the following grading rubric:

Printouts included for all 16 members (max. 30%)
Mastery of course concepts (max. 30%)
Accuracy (max. 30%)
Clear labels and organized (max. 10%)
