We are proud to announce that UMass AGC, for the 2020-2021 academic year, has been awarded the AGC Outstanding Student Chapter Award by AGC of America! In addition to a cash prize, we are invited to present our chapter at AGC’s Annual Convention in Grapevine, Texas. Here is an exerpt from an article written by the UMass College of Engineering:

This team initiated a full schedule of events for both the Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 semesters, despite being remote due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The chapter hosted two virtual construction site tours, OSHA-10 Training for 47 student participants, multiple guest lectures, and multiple chapter meetings.

The chapter also developed a club website containing event information, blog posts, resources, and event summaries. Beyond that, the officers overcame the fact that none of them had prior leadership experience with AGC nor received any training.

Thank you to all the members, faculty, sponsors who contributed to our chapter and helped make this happen! Thank you to the guest speakers who sacrificed their time for UMass AGC during the 2020-2021 academic year.

Congratulations to the 2020-2021 officers who led the UMass AGC student chapter: Nate Wright, Kitty Lovell, Eric Lee, Zoe Sloane, Kevin Brooks, and Noah Green.

  1. Good Day to all UMASS AGC Chapter members,
Unfortunately I missed the opportunity to meet those of you who were at the AGC 2022 National Convention in Texas last month. Congratulations on your award as “Emerging Chapter of the Year” at the convention. When I attended UMASS in the sixties, Civil Engineering was the “Major of Choice” for those expecting to pursue a career in construction. 50+ years later, I can attest my UMASS experience, including serving as President of the ASCE Student Chapter (no AGC chapter at the time) and my internship (then referred to as a management trainee) at the Prudential Center in Boston with Gilbane Building Company served me well. Now retired, I owe much of my career success to both the Chapters (including Connecticut, Missouri, Colorado and Greater Detroit) where I learned great professional and technical skills and networked with many other active members of AGC. On the National level of AGC, I was and still am very involved with many Committees, the Building and Federal Divisions, and served as National Treasurer in 2012-13.
Today I remain on the Board of the AGC Education and Research Foundation as well as a Life Member of the Board of Governors of AGC and a member of a number of Committees. I would hope that members of the Student Chapter would attend meetings of their AGC of America local chapter to better learn the activities of the National Association, stay active in the Student Chapter and apply for the AGC Education and Research Foundation scholarships available to students pursuing a career in construction.

    1. Hi David, thanks for your message. We were proud to represent UMass Amherst at the AGC convention, especially since it was UMass’s first time attending the convention. We’re glad to hear UMass served you well, and we will certainly take your advice and encourage more involvement with our local AGC chapter! Maybe we can connect at a future convention or event…
      Thank you,
The AGC Officers (Nate, Eric, Sam, Kitty, Tom, and Varuna)
