Welcome!

Teaching is a funny thing. Although it’s something that’s always done in the company of other people, and sometimes with a lot of people, for the teacher it can seem a bit isolating, a bit lonely. As the teacher you’re alone up there in front of the room, sometimes struggling through the silence of a class discussion, sometimes struggling to make an assignment clearer, sometimes struggling to keep everyone focused on the task at hand. Then when you leave the classroom you are alone at your desk with a lesson plan and a stack of papers. This blog is an attempt to help make the classroom a little less isolating. Each week there will be a post about some aspect of this enterprise we are engaged in. Please add your own thoughts, views, and perspectives. Since I’m a writing teacher here in the Writing Program at UMass, my posts may be more slanted towards a particular classroom setting. Other perspectives about different sites of teaching, different ways of teaching, and about teaching in general will help us all feel less alone when we enter the classroom.
