UMass INFORMS Speaker Series – Dr. Ayse Selin Kocaman

We are glad to announce the third talk of our Spring 2024 Speaker Series titled: “Optimization-Based Solutions for the Design and Operations of Sustainable Electric Power Systems,” organized by the UMass Amherst Student Chapter of INFORMS and its Faculty Advisor, Professor Anna Nagurney, and the Energy Transition Institute at UMass Amherst.

Dr. Ayse Selin Kocaman, an Associate Professor in the Industrial Engineering Department at Bilkent University and a Visiting Scholar at the MIT Energy Initiative, will give the talk. Dr. Kocaman will focus on recent research advancements in the development of optimization-based solutions for the design and operations of sustainable electric power systems.

Scientists in the Crosshairs: Impacts of War, Crisis, and Conflict on Ukrainian Science, Dr. Ina Ganguli

We are thrilled to announce the second talk of our Spring 2024 Speaker Series titled, “Scientists in the Crosshairs: Impacts of War, Crisis, and Conflict on Ukrainian Science,” organized by the UMass Amherst Student Chapter of INFORMS and its Faculty Advisor, Professor Anna Nagurney.

Dr. Ina Ganguli, Professor of Economics in the Economics and Management Departments at UMass Amherst, will give the talk. Dr. Ganguli will highlight key channels through which wars and crises have been shown to impact science. Her research highlights potentially effective ways to mitigate the impacts of war on science and ways to aid reconstruction.

Kyiv School of Economics (KSE) – A University in Wartime

Please join us on Monday, February 12, 2024, at 4:00 PM, in ISOM Room 111, as we welcome Dr. Tymofiy Mylovanov, the President of the Kyiv School of Economics (KSE) in Ukraine. Dr. Mylovanov will speak about his experiences leading KSE during wartime in Ukraine. You will also have the opportunity to learn about higher education in Ukraine and the partnership between KSE and UMass Amherst. Dr. Mylovanov is a frequent guest on CNN, BBC, and other news and media platforms.

Higher Education in the US and Ukraine – Panel: Meet the Exchange Students from the Kyiv School of Economics

Please join us on Thursday, November 2, 2023, at 7:15 p.m., in ISOM room 106, for an exciting panel at which we will welcome our exchange students from the Kyiv School of Economics (KSE) in Ukraine. You will hear about their experiences as students in Isenberg and UMass Amherst and learn about higher education in Ukraine. There will also be remarks from UMass Amherst leadership – Vice President of Global Affairs and the Director of the International Programs Office Kalpen Trivedi and from the KSE leadership – Rector Tymofii Brik.

Time And Effort In Coordinating Care For Patients With Complex Medical And Social Needs By Dr. Hari Balasubramanian

Dear UMass INFORMS Community,
We are thrilled to announce the first talk of our Fall 2023 Speaker Series, “Time And Effort In Coordinating Care For Patients With Complex Medical And Social Needs: Lessons From A Community-based Intervention,” organized by the UMass Amherst Student Chapter of INFORMS and its Faculty Advisor, Professor Anna Nagurney.
Dr. Hari Balasubramanian, Associate Professor of Industrial Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, will give the talk, in which he will discuss his ongoing collaboration with the Camden Coalition of Healthcare Providers, a New Jersey-based organization with significant experience, rich data, and national renown in the field of complex care. The talk will discuss the structure of the interventions, the results of a randomized control trial conducted by the Coalition, and a quantification of the effort needed by a multidisciplinary care team to assist patients.

Inventory Issuing Rules and Food Waste Management, Dr. Akkas

Dear UMass INFORMS community,

We are thrilled to announce the first talk of our Spring 2023 Speaker Series titled “Inventory Issuing Rules and Food Waste Management,” organized by the UMass Amherst Student Chapter of INFORMS and its Faculty Advisor, Professor Anna Nagurney.

Dr. Arzum Akkas, assistant professor at Boston University’s Questrom School of Business, will give the talk. Dr. Akkas will present findings from two research papers on managing perishable inventory at distribution centers. Her research provides guidance for managers to make inventory issuing decisions that consider the downstream supply chain’s food waste impact.
