Whispers in the Night…Another Voice is Heard

Harley is a sweet young girl aged 14.  She came into my life as my student over 2 years ago.  There was a very quick and instant bond.  She shared little bits of her life  at first and as time went on she shared more and more.  I keep a picture of her and her sister on my desk as a constant reminder of the love that they have to offer.

Our first month together was a tough month full of tears and quiet talks about “life.”  She  painted herself out as a sweet girl with above average intelligence yet was troubled by things she had no control over.  She and her two sisters had been separated and lived in 5 different foster homes.  This was only part of it, as both her mother and father were in rehab for drug problems that had been appear ant since the girls were younger.  Her tears in the first month I met her were that of confusion, anger and sadness as she just didn’t know how to cope with he world that was around her.  I admit, she become my little teacher’s pet.  She had  gotten inside my heart.

The 6th foster home was different and she knew it right away.  The woman not only took her in but also her younger sister too.  There was structure and boundaries in the house along with love and expectations.  When the women asked to adopt them, Harley came to me and asked me to be present in court.

I have watched her blossom into a fine young women and expect very big things from her.  I continue to keep my wing over her and have been gaining the trust of her younger sister.  I know both will make it and reach their dreams.
