Open Positions

Post Doctoral position in Trapped Ion Quantum Computing

The UMass? Ions Lab is looking for a Post Doctoral Researcher to assist with the operation of a trapped ion quantum computer utilizing integrated photonics and cryogenic cooling. Renovations to our brand new lab space are now complete and a brand new state-of-the-art cryogenic system will soon be installed.

Interested candidates should send an email with:

  1. Cover letter (1 page: research interests, motivation and background)
  2. CV (education, experience, skills, awards, publications)

Ph.D. position in Quantum Computing – Fall 2024

PhD positions are available to research trapped ion quantum computing in the UMass? Ions Lab, through either the Electrical and Computer Engineering or Physics Departments at UMass Amherst.  The UMass? Ions lab designs, fabricates and tests trapped ion quantum information processors (QIPs) for quantum computing which utilize integrated photonics to address and control trapped ion qubits.

Qualifications and Experience:

  1. Strong background and interest in either:

Experimental atomic physics (quantum optics, laser spectroscopy/cooling)
    -or-
    Experimental photonics (fabrication/characterization)
  2. University degree in Electrical Engineering or Physics
  3. Experience with electronics (design/layout, assembly and debug of analog circuits)
  4. Experience with cold atoms/trapped ions or cryogenic vacuum systems is a plus
  5. Python, MATLAB or Lumerical

Interested candidates should send an email with:

  1. Cover letter (1 page: research interests, motivation and background)
  2. CV (education, experience, skills, awards, publications)

Tentative start date for new admissions to UMass: Fall 2024
(currently enrolled UMass students may be able to start earlier)

Undergraduate Opportunities

We have many undergraduate students pursuing independent study and honor thesis projects in our lab. Possible projects:

  • Laser/optical systems for spectroscopy and magneto-optical trapping
  • Electronics for ion trap control
  • RF circuits for optical modulation
  • Photonics device simulation and measurements
  • Software development and Python coding (ARTIQ)
  • And many more possibilities to choose from…

If you are interested send an mail with a cover letter, CV and transcript.
