In September 2011, nearly 150 students, educators, museums professionals, academics, and preservationists gathered at the University of Massachusetts Amherst for the conference Public History 2036: The Next Twenty-Five Years.

The conference celebrated the twenty-fifth anniversary of the UMass Amherst Public History Program by looking to the future of the field. Nine speakers as well as UMass alumni addressed the challenges and opportunities that face public historians in the twenty-first century.

Chris Wilson, Professor of Cultural Landscape Studies, Founding Director, Historic Preservation and Regionalism Program, University of New Mexico, in conversation with Max Page, Professor of Art and History, UMass Amherst
Graciela Sanchez, director, Esperanza Peace and Justice Center, San Antonio, Texas, in conversation with historian and film maker, Joyce Follet
