End of Semester Blog Post – Spring 2012

May 18th, 2012 by Dr. Caldwell

Hi Kin 297G,

I hope everyone survived the end of semester and are now into your summer plans. I have had a few requests about the results of the final group presentation grades, and the exam 2 grades.  To that end I have just posted to the website (on the Reading Materials page)  a .pdf with a histogram of the Exam 2 grades and a list of the presentation 2 group scores.

Have a great summer! … Dr. C.

Friday April 27 Update – Last weekend!

April 27th, 2012 by Dr. Caldwell

Hi Kin 297G,

Next week sees the end of the semester, with Tuesday our last day of class, and then our final exam on Friday.  The final three student presentations are:

Tuesday May 1

Group 10A: Swimsuit Design

Group 11A: Aging & Athletic Performance

Group 12A: Long Jumping

Please be prepared to ask questions at the end of each presentation.

I have made good progress on the exam, which will have 4 sections (total 100 points):

1. Multiple Choice questions from the Student Presentations (24 points)

2. Multiple Choice questions from the lectures (45 points)

3. Fill-in the Blanks from the lectures (16 points)

4. Short answer question from the lectures (15 points)

The Student Presentations include the first set from before Spring Break (Groups 1 to 12) and the 2nd set that will end on Tuesday  (Groups 1A to 12A). The lectures include the two from the week after the first exam (Feb. 28, March 1) and the four after Spring Break (March 29, April 3, 5, 10). Information regarding the topics in these lectures can be found on the class website.

Several people have asked about the possibility of a “study guide”. The slides posted on the website and the information above should provide a good guide to preparation for the exam. If you have attended class and been engaged in the course material throughout the semester, you should be in good shape for the exam. As I have built the exam I have taken into account suggestions made by various students, placing more value on the multiple choice, reducing the points associated with the fill-in the blanks and the short answer. I decided against the idea of having a choice in which short answer question to answer, as it raises issues about relative scoring among the different chosen questions. I have tried to aim the questions in all sections at major points, rather than interrogate you about small details…. time will tell how successful I have been :>).

Good luck with your preparation for the end of the semester, and in all your exams and final projects. See you in class on Tuesday.

Cheers,

Dr. C.

Tuesday March 27 Update

March 27th, 2012 by Dr. Caldwell

Hi Kin 297G,

As promised in class today, I have added a few things to the class website. On the Reading Materials page you will now find links to all 12 of the presentations from before Spring Break. I also added the Presentation Groups (with e-mail addresses) for the second set of presentations, along with the page of possible presentation topics. Remember that each group should e-mail me with their selected topic by Friday March 30, and send me an outline by Thursday April 5.  For the groups who selected topics immediately after class today, please send me an e-mail with your topic, copied to all members of the group.  This will ensure that we are all on the same page, and give me a record of who selected what topic and when.  Remember, all groups must get confirmation that their topic is approved, in case some other group has already chosen your desired topic…. this has already happened once today.

On Thursday, March 29 we will have a lecture on neural mechanisms that are associated with strength and endurance training. On the class website, I have posted a reading (Duchateau et al., 2006), and some lecture notes/slides for the class.
