Sept 2018: Julia Miehm is Awarded Travel Grant for Best Abstract Submission

Master’s student Julia Miehm is awarded travel grant for writing one of 5 best abstract submissions by a trainee.  Her travel grant and free conference registration bring her to the 8th International Symposium on Gait and Balance in MS in Portland, Oregon, where she will present her most recent work.

July 2018: Miles Bartlett and Liam Fitzgerald Win Dean’s Ph.D. Summer Fellowship

The School of Public Health and Health Sciences has awarded seventeen Dean’s Ph.D. Summer Fellowships for summer 2018.  The awards will provide support for Ph.D. students in excellent standing to pursue their research and complete their dissertations during the summer months.  Congratulations, Liam and Miles!

The American Kinesiology Association awarded Master’s student Julia Miehm the Master’s Scholar Award for her research on foot tap speed as a clinical marker for individuals with Multiple Sclerosis.

The School of Public Health and Health Sciences at UMass Amherst recognized Kinesiology students during their annual awards ceremony.  Ph.D. students Liam Fitzgerald and Christine St. Laurent (from Dr. Sofiya Alhassan’s Pediatric Physical Activity lab) receive the Priscilla M. Clarkson Graduate Scholarship in Kinesiology.

Nov 2017: Julia Miehm Wins NEACSM 2017 Student Investigator Master’s Award

Julia Miehm won the Student Investigator Masters Award for her presentation on foot tap speed as a marker for clinical assessment in individuals with Multiple Sclerosis.  Her presentation and research were well-received at the New England American College of Sports Medicine conference.  Congratulations, Julia!

Sept 2017: Joseph Gordon III is Awarded NEAGEP Fellowship for 2017-2018 Year

The Muscle Physiology Lab welcomes Joseph Gordon III, who has been awarded the NEAGEP Fellowship to study sex-related differences in the aging muscle at UMass Amherst.  Joseph joins us from the University of Central Florida where he earned his Master’s in Applied Exercise Physiology.  There he collaborated with co-workers to author three publications.  Welcome, Joseph!

June 2017: Liam Fitzgerald Wins ACSM Foundation Research Grant

Liam Fitzgerald receives funding for his dissertation titled “Can Bioenergetics Explain Age-Related Differences in Muscle Fatigue,” to examine whether there is a biochemical basis for the greater muscle fatigue older women experience compared to younger women during high-speed muscular work.  Congratulations, Liam!

Oct 2015: Erica Hartman Wins Master’s Student Presentation Competition at NEACSM

On October 15th, Erica Hartman won the Master’s Student Investigator Presentation Competition at the 2015 New England American College of Sports Medicine conference.  She presented her research showing that foot tap speed is significantly slower in older adults than younger adults and that a slower foot tap speed is related to reduced physical function in older adults.  Congratulations on a fantastic presentation, Erica!
