  • EVENT: Instructional Innovation at UMass Amherst

    DESCRIPTION: University of Massachusetts Amherst instructors often set the standard for curricular innovation by integrating new teaching methods and technological tools into their classes, positioning UMass Amherst a destination of choice for students across the world. Join UMass Amherst Information Technology staff to hear about some of the exciting classroom technology innovations that instructors are using now.

  • EVENT: Presentation Design
    DATE: Thursday, Dec. 17, 2015
    TIME: 10 a.m.- 11:30 a.m.
    DESCRIPTION: How many times have you had a “Death by PowerPoint” experience? You can easily avoid common mistakes that result in dull or ineffective presentations by following a few simple design principles. In this seminar-style workshop, we will discuss the basics of effective slide design and offer practical tips for creating presentations that support an active learning environment. NOTE: This is not a hands-on workshop. The principles we teach can be applied to PowerPoint, Keynote, Prezi, and even overhead projectors.

  • EVENT: Lecture Capture Information Session (Echo360)
    DATE: Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016
    TIME: 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
    DESCRIPTION: Please join us for a discussion of the new, next-generation lecture capture system at UMass Amherst: the Echo360 Active Learning Platform (ALP). We’ll take a look at the options for capturing your lectures and content, how to find your way around the ALP, integrating with your learning management system, how to request the service, where to get support, and more.

    DESCRIPTION: Are your students producing videos for class projects? Join us for a discussion of best practices for successful student video workflow: from shooting and editing, to sharing and providing feedback.

  • EVENT: Photosharing: Teaching and Learning with Instagram
    DATE: Thursday, Jan. 7, 2016
    TIME: 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
    DESCRIPTION: According to the Pew Research Center 53 percent of young adults ages 18-29 are using Instagram, a social photo and video-sharing application. In this hands-on workshop, we’ll cover the basics of Instagram, and explore some of its uses in higher education. More importantly, we’re going to get out of the classroom and get some practice taking, transforming, and sharing pictures and videos. This is a snow/rain or shine workshop. (Bring weather-appropriate outdoor gear.) Prerequisite: Please have a mobile device that can take pictures and has an updated version of the Instagram app. Need help installing Instagram?   • EVENT: Top Hat Classroom Response System
    DATE: Tuesday, January 12, 2016
    TIME: 1:30 p.m. – 3 p.m.
    DESCRIPTION: Top Hat’s classroom response system is a web based app that uses computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. If you’re interested in incorporating certain types of non-high stakes testing, interactive exercises, or if you teach classes with off-campus learners, we think you could benefit from incorporating Top Hap into your course plans. Top Hat representative will also tell us about their offline solution to internet connectivity issues.
