class 6 hegemony & TV

1.  Post your web drama “distinctive angle” reviews to your group blog. Send me a link by Sunday, 2.28.15.

2.  Reading response questions – review before doing the readings.

  1. CritMedianotSelfFor each analytic frame (subheading)  Gitlin discusses in “Prime Time Ideology” — Format and Formula, Genre, Setting and Character Type, Slantselect a sentence/sequence (or two) that strikes you as interesting and purposeful to discuss in class.
  2. After reading the definitions for Hegemony, Ideology, and the chapter, “Prime Time Ideology,” (readings 1-3) free write on how the ideas resonate for you – or not?  What are your thoughts on Gitlin’s wide-ranging analysis of the ways in which TV form and content constructs and reinforces the cultural hegemony of capitalism?

If by the time you get to the following question (#3), you’ve spent at least two hours on homework, than read through to ponder, but hold off on writing any more. We’ll discuss this question in class.

  1. Take one of the analytic frames Gitlin applies, e.g. Genre, and use it to begin to analyze the web drama your group has written about.  This means considering how form and content may convey certain underlying cultural-symbolic (ideological-hegemonic) meanings.  As an example,  for the web drama H+, a direction I might follow would be to free write some ideas about how relationships between technology, the marketplace, social relations, and power are dramatized to seem natural, “the way it is.”
