St. Louis Symphony Orchestra

The Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra is recognized internationally as an ensemble of the highest caliber. Maestro David Robertson captures the audience’s attention whenever he stands at the podium. Energetic and vital, few conductors are as riveting, or make the concert experience so much fun. The Amherst program includes Vaughn-Williams” “Variations on a Theme of Thomas Tallis,” John Adams” “Dr. Atomic Symphony,” and Tchaikovsky’s ‘symphony No. 6.”

‘st. Louis Symphony Orchestra music director David Robertson wants to change what is customary. The conductor of this proud 129-year-old orchestra prefers his concerts tightly connected, even if it means presenting a new-music program without the neutralizer of a tired war horse. How many major or mid-major orchestras ever do that?” (Chicago Sun-Times) More Information

  1. Stupendous concert — most exciting interpretations I’ve heard in a long time. Magnificent colors and energy!

  2. I loooved the performance. I almost cried towards the end of Tchaikovsky. I myself have been playing violin since 5 and have played at an orchestra as well. 🙂 Brought back so many wonderful memories. Please have more events like this!!!!!!!

  3. When my wife and I were dating and engaged 50 years ago we had season tickets to the St. Louis Symphony. That season they played the Pathetique Symphony and the audience applauded at the end of the magnificent third movement, just as they did last night. As a physicist, the music from “Dr. Atomic” carries some special meanings for me too. Having the SLS here in our 50th anniversary year is very special! They were wonderful .

  4. Thank you for bringing this orchestra in. They were terrific! Loved the energy they brought to all 2 pieces. Please bring more orchestras to Amherst!

  5. The orchestra was marvelous. I particularly enjoyed hearing “Dr. Atomic” 3 weeks after having attended “Nixon in China” at the Met, courtesy the Asian Arts & Culture program’s bus trip.

  6. The Tchiakovsky symphony number 6 is one of my all time favorites, The St. Louis Symphony’s presentation was outstanding. More orchestras please.

  7. The St. Louis Symphony orchestra had an immense presence — not just in size but because of their success in performing three such different pieces. Dr. Atomic seemed to be incredibly difficult and fascinating to observe. The Pathetique was among the most powerful we have heard. Bravo and thank you for inviting them.

  8. A wonderful evening. Nasty night. Didn’t want to leave home, but amply rewarded when we did. The music was superb. The conductor a pleasure to watch in his frock coat. I was surprised by my enjoyment of Dr Atomic. I always figure those pieces are included for my edification, but not necessarily for my pleasure. I loved the horn.

  9. The strings-only Vaughan Williams was my favorite. However, I enjoyed the entire performance, including the conductor’s exhuberance, and the way the audience had to clap before the end of Tchaikovsky. Dynamic, memorable performance! Bravo to the musicians and the conductor!

  10. I loved last night’s performance. I especially enjoyed watching the conducting of the sympnony’s conductor. His movements were so measured and the orchestra’s interpretation of all the pieces superb. I was also moved to tears at the end of the pathetique. Please bring more orchestral music of this quality to the FAC. Thank you.
