Festival of South African Dance: “Stimela the Musical”

Tuesday October 17, 2017 @ 7:30 PM

With precise and technical footwork, often to the accompaniment of house music, Pantsula is rooted in street culture and used to respond to cultural and political issues. Stimela the Musical, featuring an ensemble of 20 men, is a unique South African story that tells a tale of rural African men who come by train from all walks of life in search of greener pastures in the city of gold, Johannesburg.

Pre-show talk in the Concert Hall Lobby at 6:15 pm.

  1. Fabulous, exhilarating show! The musicians and dancers were outstanding – boundless energy, skill and commitment to their art. A wonderful cultural experience.

  2. A high-energy performance with professional, talented dancers and musicians. An entertaining cultural experience.

Can the FAC playbill have a color cover? For sustainability, the playbills could be collected at the end of the show and reused at the following performance and each group/family could receive only one.

  3. Truly talented dancers and musicians. Incredible energy, precision and message. What a way to communicate!

  4. We so enjoyed the performance and it was great to see so many fellow South Africans support this event!

  5. Besides the obvious energy and talent, it was
great to learn about the cultural background of
both dance forms especially via the bonus of the pre-show lectures.
Also nice to learn about hip hop’s social dance roots
    from some 1920’s dance.

  6. Stunningly beautiful music and harmonies. So much energy and touching vignettes. Really glad we went!

  7. Another big surprise for us at the FAC. We didn’t know anything about this performance before we went, but were amazed. We wish we had read the program notes in advance. Reading the playbill gave us a whole new perspective about what this kind of dance is all about. What amazing energy and harmonies. Can’t wait for them to return! If there were numbers attached to this review, this group would get the highest number.

  8. I am happy that I did not miss this event. What an outstanding performance! Please bring them back soon.
