Contra-Tiempo | Urban Latin Dance Theater

Fine Arts Center Concert Hall

CONTRA-TIEMPO, a bold, multilingual Los Angeles-based dance company creates physically electrifying dances combing Salsa, Afro-Cuban, hip-hop, and contemporary dance with theater, text, and original music. Contra-Tiempo celebrates diversity by creating stories not traditionally heard or seen on the concert stage. For this special school time performance they will perform a 30 minute excerpt from Agua Furiosa as well as excerpts from I Dream America (“Letter to Hip Hop” and “Let America Be”). The performance will be followed by a question and answer period with the artists.

Ages: Grades 2-12
Running time: 55 minutes

  1. As a homeschool parent, I would like to thank the Fine Arts Center for allowing us to participate in watching this wonderful dance troop. Their energy and expertise in movement was impressive. As an adult watching, I was a little confused on what their message was. I asked my student, and she was confused, too. We understood the words of their explanation, but did not follow exactly how it played out in dance. Maybe we are just too new at understanding their interpretation. We absolutely loved the singer.

  2. Although the messages that we were able to understand were powerful, this was beyond the level of understanding for fifth graders. It was more appropriate for middle and high school. We were expecting more straight dance; your blurb on the flyer last spring did not really explain what the show would be like. The adults loved the hip hop history poem, but the kids didn’t really understand that. The dancers, the drumming, and the music were exciting. The spoken sound track was hard to hear and/or understand.
