$42, $38, $15; Five College, GCC and 17 & under $15, $12, $10

The electrifying Brazilian contemporary dance company Grupo Corpo combines the sensuality of Afro-Brazilian dance forms, the liquid swing of jazz, and the technical prowess of ballet, with energy to burn. The company is renowned for its stunning physicality, dynamic ability, and rich visual finesse. The program will include one of the company’s most celebrated works, Sem Mim, inspired by the sea and the songs of medieval Galician-Portuguese troubadours.

Audience members are invited to stay for a post-performance talk with the company, moderated by Amherst College Spanish Professor Lucia Saurez, immediately following the performance.

  1. The choreography gave rise to new painterly ideas, (the weaving in and out of rhythms, the repetitive sound of feet on the floor, the repetitive dancerly movements, and skill of the dancers). Lines of movements plastically breathed in and out of a space. The ocean curtain of waves for “Sem Mim,” coupled with the tatooed bodies dancing within them, became primitive ancient folklore, e.g., moving underwater without weight, a prayer to the ocean. In “Onqoto,” shadows became as relevant as the dancers, who then slithered through the backdrop back and forth, through thin slats of openings reborn at each re-entry. I remain exhilerated this morning with images that keep rising up from the performance that I am playing with in my visual mind. Thank you for bringing this brilliant group that has inspired me so much.

  2. We had a fabulous time last night at the UMass Fine Arts Center. The Grupo Corpo dance company was tremendous, and it was a treat to be able to participate in such a fabulous cultural event right here in Amherst. Thank you UMAss FAC!!

  3. What a spectacular performance! It’s hard to pick a favorite moment, but I loved the pas-de-deux in Sem Mim. Both pieces integrated movement, music, lighting, costumes, and sets in a wholly original manner to surprise and delight the audience. Thank you for bringing us this very talented dance troupe.
