Ravi Coltrane Quartet

Friday, April 13, 8pm, Bowker Auditorium

To say Ravi Coltrane was born in auspicious circumstances is a bit of an understatement. The son of saxophone legend John Coltrane and Alice Coltrane, he was named after sitar master Ravi Shankar. Yet, Ravi has followed his own path in music since 1991, and while working within his father’s long shadow (as all saxophonists do), he has established himself as a major player with a unique personal sound. His longtime quartet – with pianist Luis Perdomo, bassist Drew Gress, and drummer E.J. Strickland – has established themselves as one of the most consistently thrilling and acclaimed working groups in jazz today.

Reserved Seating: $30, $15; FC, GCC, STCC and 17 & under $10

Ravi Coltrane is a critically acclaimed and Grammy nominated saxophonist, bandleader, and composer. Since 1991, Mr. Coltrane has worked as a sideman with many jazz luminaries, recorded noteworthy albums for himself and others, overseen important jazz reissues, and founded the prominent independent record label, RKM.

  1. Great show! I was impressed by all the players. Melodic, exploratory, enchanting, cohesive. I love the way acoustic piano takes me on a journey. Drummer kept bringing it back to the groove. Bass was great on solos, otherwise a little muddy. Sax was like a bird in the woods. Delightful. I’m looking forward to the new CD.

  2. Seeing and listening to Ravi Coltrane at our Bowker Auditorium meant a lot to me. I never saw him perform in person. Last year, I had tickets to see him at the City Winery for a Jazz Gallery fundraiser in NYC but the threat of a snow storm stopped me from going. Ravi has a beautiful soulful sound. I was happily surprised several times throughout the evening at his creativity and delivery. He means a lot to me because I love his dad and appreciate the body of work he left for us to enjoy. I also appreciate that Ravi Coltrane performed with his wonderful mother Alice who is as talented and as beautiful as Ravi is. I especially enjoyed when Alice was remembered at the performance; Ravi’s reaction was sweet and spiritual. At the end of the performance I was proud to stand in ovation to this fine young musician and all he represents and brings to us. John and Alice, I know, remain proud of their very talented son. Thank you, UMass Amherst Fine Arts Center! Well done!
