I dont understand it (a rant of sorts)

Something I don’t understand about college life is the idea of drinking until you can’t function. This weekend I had experienced firsthand what it means to get ‘kerplasterfucked’. Hanging out on campus with all my friends shows me just how irresponsible and slightly depressing this place can be. With so much drama so much drinking and so much depression.

I know that by now I have set myself up to seem like somewhat of an asshole. I have nothing against getting drunk, I have nothing against getting wasted. I do have a problem with vomiting up 30 dollars of booze for a “good time”. There are people on this campus who do not have self control. Moderation is a trait that many people need to utilize in order to function properly. The first days of my weekend were fun. My friends got drunk, I didn’t because I am on prednisone. But despite all of that my first days were fun. I hung out with some good people, talked about some funny stuff and went on numerous adventures. However, as the night wound down, people began to change from funny stumbling ‘Im not as Think as you Drunk I am’ to – ‘BLLLAAAAAGHHHHHHHH’. There is a line where people shouldn’t cross often, and that line is drawn with a one foot radius around a toilet bowl.

SPEW

What is the fasination with getting so drunk that one cannot stand on their own. What is this fascination with getting so plastered that the only way you are going to feel better is if your body expels all the alcohol from your system. What is this fascination with feeling like shit rather than feeling good. I don’t understand it.

On Saturday night I hung around the North East section of campus watching some TV with my friend. And randomly in the middle of Invader Zim, some people come busting into the room completely fall over drunk and just begin talking to us. There was no structure to this conversation, it was just “ohhhh man dude, bro, yo, I’m soooooo drunk!”…really? you are drunk? I hadn’t noticed by the tell tale smell and the fact that you are stumbling over air. People feel the need to experience freedom in this country, and they think that the only way to experience that freedom is to get wasted and do something illegal. Doing something illegal is not freedom. Instead, write to your congressman trying to get them to decriminalize marijuana if you are so inclined. Write to the president to try and lower the drinking age. You are doing it anyway, might as well have a reason for it. It is not an act of rebellion to do something stupid, it is an act of rebellion to do something DIFFERENT. And trust me, just about EVERYONE on this campus is the same when it comes to alcohol consumption

The whole institution of College drunkenness completely alludes me. I can understand getting buzzed, or getting a little tipsy, or even just getting good ol’ plain drunk. But it is when you are belligerently falling over yourself, appologizing to everyone and giggling while you puke up 3 weeks of food that it starts to bother me. Have some self control, learn to moderate yourself. It is not healthy to do this to yourself. Please slow down, save some money, save some time, and save the poor bastard that has to clean up your fucking puke.

Sex on the Lawn: Preacher oh Preacher

Last Thursday was the celebration event of “Sex on the Lawn”. This event was presented on the Umass campus in order to raise awareness about safe sex. It wasn’t glorifying sex, it wasn’t demonizing sex, it was just teaching people that there are safe ways to have sex, as well as many alternatives. But in the corner of the Library Lawn with a big sign saying “Accept God You’re Savior” there was a preacher that decided to rain on the parade.

I can understand why he was on the campus, but I did not appreciate him being there.  He came with hate rather than love.  Even though his hate was guised as love it was obvious that he was there trying to convert a group of people into following him and his ideals.  He was not accepting of other peoples beliefs and did not respect the people that were asking him questions.

In his presentation he talked about sinners and how all of us were going to hell for attending something like sex on the lawn.  He said that premarital sex is immoral and wrong.  Which I personally believe is complete crap.  He spoke of morals, and right and wrong.  Overall all his ideas were very closed minded and to the point.  Then about halfway through his speech he began to talk about “The Gays” and how they were all going to hell.  This put me into a rage, I couldn’t stand what he was saying.  If god loves all mankind, then he wouldn’t hate gay people.  The ideas he was presenting I found to be disgusting.  During his rant I raised my hand and asked him a question.  I asked “If I could save 50,000,000 peoples lives by engaging in gay sex with another man, and I did it, would I go to hell?”  He did not directly answer my question but he did say that God is not asking me to sin.  I think this was absurd, if I could save that many people by doing something so trivial, I would do it.  And its absolutely ludacris to think that I wouldn’t be accepted into heaven if I did it.  If what he was saying is true, then it wouldn’t matter how good a person I was, it only matters if I break the rules of ‘god’.

After his rant about gay people (which included the “gay song” which talked about the imorality of gay people).  He began to talk about the commandments.  He said that we should always follow the ten commandments.  This was another instance where I raised my hand to retort his point.  He said that we need to honor our parents.  So I raised my hand and asked “So if when I was young, and my parents locked me in a room, beat me and raped me, I’m supposed to respect them?”.  He said “Respect no, Honor Yes”.  I personally don’t understand the difference.  If my parents did that to me when I was younger, I wouldn’t give them the time of day.  I wouldn’t respect them at all, and if it really happened, and I was old enough, I would probably want to kill them.

I don’t understand what he was trying to say or what his mission was.  He came to one of the most liberal schools in the nation and tried to convert a group of people.  The kids in the crowd were getting so riled up that at points he actually was literally backed up against a wall.  I don’t get why he felt the need to do this.  Yeah, religion is great for some people, but it is NOT ok to push your religious ideas onto other people.

Spiderman 3: Travesty or Triumph

Reviewing Spiderman three is difficult. This is a yin and yang argument for me. The film lover in me says that it was a great flick, a few minor problems, but overall a great movie. But the Comic Book lover in me says “WHAT THE HELL JUST HAPPENED!?”.

Directed by Sam Raimi, Spiderman was a more than decent movie. For the girls and the boys, Spiderman encapsulates a heart wrenching love story as well as some kick ass action. Mary Jane Watson and Peter Parker are deeply in love. Things are going well and life is swell. Until the Hobgoblin comes into their life. Harry Osbourne has been pretty pissed off ever since his father died, he wants to kill the hell out of Spiderman. But the Hobgoblin (Harry) isn’t the only person Spiderman(Peter Parker) goes up against, there were multiple enemies including Sandman(Flint Marko) and Venom (Eddie Brock, Jr.).

It took a little while for the action to really pick up, but when it did it was tremendous. The love story was a bit tiring. In comparison to the comic book, the movie had too much love and not enough action. The movie from a film point of view, was decently put together. Near the end, the story got a bit jumbled, there were too many enemies running about. The overall plot of the movie was great, it was a good love story mixed in with a great story about identity and loss. Overall it was an emotional movie that had some very good action.

WARNING: SPOILER ALERT

Now for the fanboy in me to come out and be heard. For the fanboy in me, this movie was an absolute upset. The movie strayed greatly from the subject matter in the comic books. There was much artistic liscence taken by the writers and the director in order to make everything fit. In the origional comic book, The Sandman was not a compassionate man who was wrongfully accused. He was a cutthroat bloodthirsty killer who was locked up in Rikers Prison for killing numerous people. Also in this movie, Venom was never teamed up with Sandman. Sandman was part of an elite crime fighter fighting league called the sinister six, but never was he specifically teamed up with Venom. However this wasn’t the most disappointing aspect of the movie.

“WHAT THE HELL!” is exactly what I screamed about 5 minutes before the movie ended. For this was a travesty. Eddie Brock and Venom only lasted about 20 minutes in the film. The entire depiction of Venom in the movie though visually correct was contextually inaccurate. Venom is not capable of spinning web that sticks, the way he was shown in the movie, was that he was capable of spinning lasting web. However, whenever the Simbiote is detached from its host, it dies quite quickly. But still there were greater disappointments. At the end of the movie…Venom is killed. In the comic book series, Venom is one of the more significant enemies Spiderman had ever encountered. He was so influential that there is a whole comic book set, designated solely to the conflict between Eddie Brock and Peter Parker. To have just a glimpse of Venom in this movie greatly disappointed me. Also killing of Venom greatly limits the amount of true enemies that Spiderman will have in the future. The director has used up almost all of the major enemies in the whole comic book series. The only ones left are The Lizard and Aquaman.

Overall I loved the movie, it was a great action picture. But when I look at it in terms of “Comic book Boy” (my self proclaimed alias), tears come to my eyes.

ohhhh Tommy tom (redux)

Today was an interesting class.  Very insightuful into the innerworkings of the bloggers mind.  Today Tommy Devine came in to talk to us about blogging.  I have to admit that many of the things he spoke about I had already thought over.  How the internet is slowly but surly becoming the ends all of media information.  But here is a brief overview of his lecture.

1. Media has changed: NEWSPAPER IS DEAD!

-internet has allowed us to communicate more freely

2.  DONT YOU DARE BLOG FOR FREE

- apply to google (the internet god) and get them to place ads on your blog page.  If     they do this  you can monitor how many people have visited your blog and you can make them give you cash money.

3. The Age Gap:  yes anyone can blog but old people are naaive

4. The creation of the internet: From the Pentagon to Porno

5. The future of the internet: The TV=The computer

Overall I thought the things he said were all very interesting.  I was intrigued to find out exactly where the internet was born.  I had no idea that it was a Pentagon technology, and that the first buisnesses on the internet were Porn sites.  He also mentioned that the internet is a great place to shop because there is no tax on anything you buy from it.

The most interesting thing he talked about however, was how blogging has changed the face of news.  News has evolved from Newspapers and TV and it is much more accessible because of blogs.  Because of these blogs, people can access whatever news THEY care about, it isn’t just what the media chooses.  It was great to hear all this stuff.  But eventually at about 9:30 Tommy began repeating himself, and I semi zoned out.  Because he had already talked about the shit he was repeating (obviously) I decided to draw batman on my page.  However, when I was finished drawing Batman, I got frightened.  I was frightened because Batman was staring me down, so I began to listen to Tommy again because of my fear.  But overall, it was all very informative.

The War on Hicks Way

The morning was cool.  They could hear the humans shuffle around in their hurried way.  The wind blew cool, but the fight was hot as molten iron.  Its hard to believe how this all started…

There were two major areas to these animals worlds, the fields (which contained the cornucopia) and the mighty tree.  The two feuding clans would battle between each other for  the rights to these areas.  Believed to be the holy land, these two areas have been fought over for years.  The fighting will never cease.  It has been this way since the beginning of time.

They are the Squirrel clan and the Finch clan.  The squirrels have been here since the mighty tree was but a sapling, but the finches invaded the lands few years after.  The two kings are the ones who started all the calamity.  Specklon (of the squirrel nation) and Cramny (of the Finch nation).  When the finches came they immediately laid claim to the mighty tree.  Naturally Specklon and his men were angered at the finches disregard for history.  The Specklon dynasty had lived in this great eutopia since before history could remember.

The battle insues:    The second of May two-thousand and seven.

The finches moved in fast, storming the fields trying to get at the rich food supply that is the cornucopia of this great land.  The squirrels, at first, were scared, they didn’t know what these finches were capable of.  They also didn’t know what numbers the finches had in their ranks.  The squirrels regrouped near the bush forest and thought out their tactics.  They decided to mass attack the Finch clan.

The attack began and was short lived.  The finches took to the skies and found refuge in the great tree.  They watched as the squirrel clan feasted upon the bounty of the fields.  Their jealousy and greed soon grew to new heights.  They decided to higher help.

Obitua was a of the blue jay clan.  Fierce and violent, he was a claw for hire.  The finches decided to offer him part of the food in the fields as payment.  Obitua flew in and landed not but 3 feet from the Squirrel clan.  Obeying his employees orders, he ran at the squirrels away.  There was much rejoicing in the ranks of the finches.  Every bird in the area came to feast on the seeds.

But as they fed, the squirrels plotted their next attack.  Sitting in the great tree waiting for the face of opportunity they wait.  They wait for the next opportunity to take down the birds.

ohhhh Tommy Tom

Tom tends to talk about events, and goings on around the Umass campus. He focuses on events such as the votes that are coming up in the town of Amherst, and some other personal things that happen. It seems that his type of blogging falls in with news, he talks about local government as well as news corporations. He also includes a very vague opinion about these things. He has a great voice. The way he writes seems like he is trying to include the reader rather than write just for personal satisfaction. He uses words like “we” and “us” in order to really personalize what he is talking about. Its very compelling. I don’t really enjoy the personal oppinions he brings in, they seem kind of pig headed in a way. For such a nice blogging style, his language is too laid back. He uses pictures in order to accentuate his point. The use of pictures is great because it gives you a pictoral representation of what he is typing about.
