Courtney Lannert

Prof. Courtney Lannert’s research is in the field of theoretical condensed matter physics, and she studies collective quantum-mechanical phenomena using both numerical and analytical tools. Her recent research has included studies of high-temperature superconductivity, the quantum properties of ultra-cold atoms and the behavior of quantum magnets.

Lannert enjoys teaching across the physics curriculum. She strives to integrate exploration with application and to bring a field that is often considered abstract into her students’ daily lives. She joined the Smith faculty after 10 years at Wellesley College, and she shares her current position with the University of Massachusetts Amherst: She teaches two courses in the physics department at UMass each fall semester and two courses in the Smith physics department each spring. In addition to good coffee and great beer, she enjoys hiking and growing hot peppers.
