In class, writing skills help students communicate their understanding, articulate various perspectives, and provide a platform for expressing their ideas.  How does this important higher education skill pan out in your discipline and in other disciplines?  Together, we’ll explore the complexities of writing across the curriculum.

Assessing students: Can “grading” be a source of inspiration for personal growth?

Paul Dennis got to the heart of assessment through a captivating case study.  Paul has students reflect on why they are taking his class, engage with their own goals, and to think about how they’ll achieve them.  He engaged faculty a “Critical Response Process” pioneered by Liz Lerman.  This peer-evaluation process follows five steps: 1) Statements of meaning 2) Presenter’s questions 3) Neutral Questions 4) Permissioned Opinions 5) Final Word.

How to start the semester, this was the driving question behind our first Salon of 2016-2017. Instructors from a variety of disciplines offered their own stories on how to jump into the first couple of weeks. Setting the tone, modeling expectations, building confidence, and easing student fears universally emerged as underlying themes.
