The University of Massachusetts Amherst

Biological physics research at the University of Massachusetts Amherst spans the range from single molecule biological physics through cell biophysics. Our research lies at the interface provided by other groups at UMass Amherst including the soft condensed matter experiment and theory groups, biology, polymer science, chemistry.

  • Single Molecule Biophysics: molecular interactions, motility, molecular assembly, sensing.
  • Membrane Biophysics: Osmotic pressure, ion channels. Membrane hydrodynamics.
  • Cytoskeleton: Molecular motor motility, microtubule and actin mechanics, cell mechanics.
  • Cell Biophysics: Cell division, bacteria nanowires, mechanosensing.
  • New Experimental Instrumentation
