2017-2018 TIDE Ambassadors (Teaching for Inclusion, Diversity and Equity) Faculty Fellowship award

TEFD LogoI am excited that I was chosen as a TIDE (Teaching for Inclusion, Diversity and Equity) Ambassador. The Institute for Teaching Excellence and Faculty Development, chose twelve faculty for the 2017-2018 year. I will participate in a three-day intensive symposium and develop a plan to increase inclusion and equity in our major and college. Here is a snippet I wrote that describes my goals for this fellowship:

I teach biochemistry and molecular biology. I strive to teach in a straight-forward manner and to create an inclusive environment where students can feel free to ask questions. I am originally from Miami, Florida and grew up in an immigrant community. So, I have seen first-hand how identity and privilege affect people’s lives. I joined the TIDE ambassador program because I want to do everything I can to create a welcoming and equitable classroom for my students.

In addition to my role as a lecturer, I am also the Honors Program Director for our department. Beyond my classroom, I would also like to look at how our department serves minorities. I hope that having a better idea of the challenges our students face will provide insight into ways we can provide a welcoming and equitable major for our students. My goal for this fellowship is to become a better educator by learning as much as I can, and starting to address inclusivity on a departmental level.
